CWG 2022: How India fared on Friday, July 29

India made mincemeat of Pakistan, winning 5-0, in a lop-sided mixed team event match, while the women's hockey team blanked minnows Ghana 5-0 on the opening day of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday.

However, there was disappointment for the women's cricket team as it went down to Australia by three wickets.

 

Swimmer Srihari Nataraj clocked 54.68s to qualify for the semi-finals of the men's 100 metres backstroke event.

The 21-year-old from Bengaluru was the third fastest swimmer in his heat and fifth fastest overall.

Ace boxer Shiva Thapa outclassed Pakistan's Suleman Baloch in the first round of the 63.5kg category.

India's men's and women's table tennis teams had easy starts to their respective campaigns, scoring identical 3-0 victories over Barbados and South Africa.

Later, the women crushed Fiji 3-0 in their second group match while the men had it as easy against Singapore.

A look at how India's athletes fared on Day 1 at the 2022 Commonwealth Games:

Badminton
India beat Pakistan in the Mixed Team event 5-0.

Mixed doubles: B Sumeeth Reddy-Machimanda Ponnappa beat Muhammad Irfan Saeed Bhatti-Ghazala Siddique 21-9, 21-12.

Men's singles: Kidambi Srikanth beat Murad Ali 21-7, 21-12.

Women's singles: P V Sindhu beat Mahoor Shahzad 21-7, 21-6.

Men's doubles: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty beat Murad Ali- and Muhammad Irfan Saeed Bhatti 21-12, 21-9.

Women's doubles: Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand beat Mahoor Shahzad-Ghazala Siddique 21-4, 21-5.

Squash
Women's singles: 14-year-old Anahat Singh beat Jada Ross of St Vincent and the Grenadines 11-5, 11-2, 11-0 in the women's singles Round of 64 match.

Triathlon
Men’s: Adarsh finished 30th and Vishwanath 33rd.
Women’s: Praganya and Sanjana finished 26th and 28th respectively.

Table Tennis
The women’s team beat South Africa 3-0, Fiji 3-0.
The men’s team beat Barbados 3-0, Singapore 3-0.

Boxing
Shiva Thapa defeated Baloch Suleman in the first bout of the 63.5kg men’s boxing 5:0.

Swimming
Srihari Nataraj (100m backstroke) clocked 54.68s to finish fifth overall in the heats and qualify for the semi-finals, scheduled at 1.20am IST, on Saturday, July 30.
Sajan Prakash (50m butterfly) failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
Kushagra Rawat (400m freestyle) failed to qualify for the final.

Cycling
The women’s sprint team failed to qualify for the semi-finals. India finished seventh in the qualification round with a timing of 51.433s in the women’s team sprint.
The men’s pursuit team finished last in the qualification round with a timing of 4:12.86s.
In the men’s team sprint, India placed 6th in the qualification round, failing to secure the semi-final slot for the same.

Cricket
India's women lost to Australia in their first group stage match by three wickets.

Hockey
India's women's team started with a dominant performance over No. 30-ranked Ghana, winning 5-0.

Lawn Bowls
Tania lost her first match in the women’s singles to Daphne of Falkland Islands 20-21.
In the men's team event India lost to Scotland in men’s triple sectional play 12-19.
