India football captain Sunil Chhetri has requested fans, followers and fellow Indians to reach out to those affected by Cyclone Amphan that wreaked havoc in Odisha and West Bengal last month.
On a day he completes 15 years in international football, Chhetri took to Twitter to make his plea.
“Cyclone Amphan may not be in the news anymore, but the trail of devastation it has left is a long one. Have come across so many people who are dreading the thought of rebuilding their lives and livelihoods and some of those conversations have been gut-wrenching,” he wrote.
“Just want to say that it would be great if all of us those who have, can reach out and give to those who have lost. There are a lot of people and organisations doing some good work to help. Make an informed choice and help in whatever way – big or small. It all counts,” he added.
At least 72 people died after Cyclone Amphan tore through West Bengal where two districts were 'completely devastated' with thousands of people left homeless, bridges washed away and low-lying areas in waist deep water.
The fiercest cyclone to hit West Bengal in 100 years destroyed mud houses and crops, and uprooted trees and electric poles.
It also wreaked havoc in Odisha damaging power and telecom infrastructure in several coastal districts. Odisha government officials estimated that the cyclone has affected around 44.8 lakh people in the state.
