The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) has been at the centre of heated debates around the nation. The CAB seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
And, while high profile sportsmen like Indian cricketers – past and present – have refrained from making comments over this controversial bill, two of India’s young footballers have come out and tweeted their thoughts about CAB.
Kean Lewis, who represents current Indian Super League champions, Bengaluru FC, on Wednesday very simply tweeted against the bill.
“Nothing should ever be a reason for discrimination. That's all I'll say about that. #CitizenshipAmendmentBill #CAB”.
Kerala Blasters’ midfielder, Darren Caldeira was also critical of the bill.
In his tweet, posted on Tuesday, Caldeira wrote: “Constitutional indiscrimation has always been the best part of our country. Can faith be a condition of citizenship? With the new CAB, where are we heading to?
“I’ve grown up in a colony where people from all religions resided in harmony & we had the time of our lives. Hung out, played sport, studied together & celebrated every festival like it was our own. To see what’s happening currently is plain heart breaking. Let’s spread the love.”
It was passed by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, December 11 after being cleared by Lok Sabha on Monday, December 9.
