  • The First World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930.

  • Frenchman Lucien Laurent scored the first goal against Mexico.

  • Ramon Gonzales of Paraguay scored the first own goal in a game against the United States.

  • Guillermo Stabile scored the first hat-trick for Argentina against Mexico

  • Oleg Salenko became the first and only player to score five goals in one match in Russia's 6-1 win
        over Cameroon in 1994.

  • Mario Zagalo became the first man to play in and then manage a World Cup winning team.
        (He was part of the 1952 and 1962 cup winning squads and he managed the 1970 team.)

  • The first goalless draw took place between Brazil and England in 1958.

  • Peru's captain, Mario de las Casas was the first player to be sent off, in a game against Romania
        in 1930.

  • The 1994 final between Brazil and Italy was the first to be decided on penalties.
