Jair Ventura Filho, better known as Jairzinho, was an exciting
striker in the same mould as Garrincha. He was a playmaker who
harassed defences with his openings and passes, and was
known for his tearing runs and booming shots.
His moment under the sun was in the 1970 World Cup where he scored
in every round and the final, a unique first in the annals of
World Cup history. He struck a lethal combination with Pele. In fact, the
1970 World Cup-winning squad is considered by pundits to be the
finest Brazilian teams of all time.
In the long tradition of Brazilian strikers, Jairzinho was a
dashing player who evoked a roar from the crowd every time he
touched the ball.
