Ireland pleads with FIFA for a sub

Ireland have asked FIFA if they can call Colin Healy into their World Cup squad as a replacement for former captain Roy Keane, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said on Wednesday.

Keane was sent home last week following a bust-up with team manager Mick McCarthy, and the FAI delayed asking for permission to replace him until it was certain there was no possibility of the midfielder returning to take part in the tournament.

It is unlikely that FIFA will allow Ireland to call up Healy, who plays for Scottish champions Celtic, because players can normally only be replaced for reasons of injury or special circumstances such as a family bereavement.
