Goals

G-O-A-L. Every World Cup is known for goals and its scorers. Here is a selection of goals which will remain in our collective consciousness for many years to come.

Carlos' GoalGoalscorer: Roberto Carlos of Brazil.

Match info: Brazil v China, group C, at the Seogwipo-Jeju World Cup stadium, South Korea, on June 8.

Set up: Brazil are awarded a free-kick on the right flank, 25 yards from the goal, off Roberto Carlos range. China get into a huddle and form a wall. Carlos takes a long run-up to gather pace and momentum. He blasts the ball around the wall and into the left corner of the net, to leave goalkeeper Jiang Jin to clutch at an air pocket.

Seaman's gaffeGoalscorer: Ronaldinho of Brazil.

Match info: England v Brazil, quarter-final at the Shizuoka stadium Ecopa, Japan, on June 21.

Set up: Ronaldinho steps forward to take a free-kick on the right flank. English defenders jostle Brazil's strikers, waiting for a long overhead at the goal mouth. Ronaldinho strikes the ball with the outside of his right foot. The ball floats high and then dips into the goal off the underside. Goalkeeper Seaman's first instinct is to rush out. He backtracks, but is caught flat-footed. A stunning 42 yard strike at a 45 degree angle!

Borgetti's goal Goalscorer: Jared Borgetti of Mexico.

Match info: Mexico v Italy, group G, at Oita Big Eye stadium, Japan, on June 13.

Set up: Blanco chips the ball from close to the half-way line to the edge of the penalty area, on the left. Borgetti rushes to meet it with Maldini in hot pursuit. Borgetti outruns, outjumps Maldini and heads home with a glancing header.

Edmilson's genius Goalscorer: Edmilson of Brazil.

Match info: Brazil v Costa Rica, group C, at the Suwon World Cup stadium, South Korea, on June 13.

Set up: Defender Edmilson initiates a move just inside the Costa Rican half. He taps the ball to Rivaldo on the left and strides ahead for the overlap. Rivaldo holds the ball back and paces his lay-off to Edmilson, who in turn relays it further to his left to Junior. He rounds off a player and crosses to the near post. Edmilson, who's running at full tilt, receives it with his back to the goal. He adjusts himself and hooks the ball home with an overhead acrobatic volley.

Marc Wilmots, Belgium's inspiration Goalscorer: Marc Wilmots of Belgium.

Match info: Belgium v Japan, group H, at the Saitama stadium, Japan, on June 4.

Set up: Verheyen goes on a long run down the right flank and crosses. Van der Heyden traps the ball on the left flank and swings it into the box. Strupar rushes to meet the ball and heads it across the face of the goal. The ball comes on to the path of an advancing Wilmots. He checks his run and ends with his back to the goal. Wilmots leaps and smacks the ball home with an overhead kick.
