Roger Federer [Images] eased into the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over American qualifier Kevin Kim on Friday.

The world number two was never in any danger against 30-year-old Kim, the world number 107, and saved all five of the break points against him on the Key Biscayne hardcourt.

"I realised very quickly what his pattern was, especially on the serve," Federer told reporters. "He had a good serve today, he had a good few games, but I think I did well. It was a great start to the tournament," he added.

With little sign of upsets in the air, third seed Novak Djokovic [Images] defeated Canadian Frank Dancevic [Images] 6-3, 6-2.

"In most of my first-round games this year I haven't found the right rhythm but I was pretty happy with the way I started this tournament," Serb Djokovic said.

Russian Marat Safin [Images] and his sister Dinara Safina also advanced.

Safin, the 22nd seed, put out Spain's Oscar Hernandez 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 and world number two Safina swept aside Mathilde Johansson of France [Images] 6-1, 6-3.

Fourth seed Elena Dementieva [Images] had to fight hard for a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 win over fellow-Russian Anastasia Pivovarova.

Dementieva was pushed hard in the third set by the 18-year-old wildcard, who is ranked 172nd in the world.

Italy's [Images] Flavia Pennetta beat Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 7-5 while Swiss Patty Schynder had to come from a set down to oust Czech Lucie Safarova 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Later on Friday home favourite Andy Roddick [Images], the world number six, starts his campaign against Argentine Diego Junquiera.

In the women's event, seventh-seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic [Images] takes on Ukrainian qualifier Mariya Koryttseva.
