The unseeded Indian carved out a hard-fought 7-6(5) 7-6(4) win over his Australian opponent.

He next faces local player and qualifier Joshua Goodall, who rallied to beat Edouard Roger Vasseelin 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) in another second round match.

Meanwhile, in the doubles event Rohan Bopanna and his American partner Jim Thomas gave a walkover to third seed Americans Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky.

The duo was slated to play the quarter-final match but they opted out of the contest due to Bopanna's knee injury.
