Arvind Bhatt stunned world No 8 Joachim Persson of Denmark as Indians made a resounding start at the Hong Kong Super Series badminton championships. All their shuttlers won their first round singles matches on Wednesday.

Beijing [Images] Olympics [Images] quarter-finalist Saina Nehwal [Images] staved off the challenge of Thailand's Salakjit Ponsana, winning 21-19, 22-20 in 33 minutes.

Bhatt then pulled off a stunner, beating sixth seed Persson 21-17, 21-17 to advance to the second round.

Persson could not negotiate the smashes of Bhatt and the world No 41 wrapped the match in just 29 minutes.

Chetan Anand also made it to the next round, but, unlike Bhatt, had to break some sweat before overcoming Czech Petr Koukal 21-18, 17-21, 21-13 in a 50-minute battle.

India had just one disappointment when Saina and her doubles partner Anna Rice of Canada [Images] were handed a 16-21, 11-21 defeat by the Malaysian duo of Chiou Hwee Haw and Pek Siah Lim in 27 minutes.
