The Indian challenge at the Swiss Super Series badminton tournament ended with Anup Sridhar and Saina Nehwal [Images] going down to their more fancied rivals.

Sridhar retired after losing the first game 9-11 against Indonesian seventh seed Taufik Hidayat and conceded the second round match at Basel.

Sridhar, who had beaten Japanese Shoji Sato 22-20, 13-21, 21-14 in the first round, gave Hidayat a run for his money in the opening game but could not take field for the second game.

Hidayat now faces Chinese third seed Bao Chunlai, who beat Hong Kong's Ng Wei 21-13, 21-13.

Saina went down to top seeded Chinese Xie Xingfang 13-21, 10-21 in women's singles second round.

The Chinese shuttler, who will be in action at next month's India Open in Hyderabad, now faces Hong Kong's Zhou Mi.

The Indian women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurian had earlier lost in the opening round.
