Singapore has been given the green light to hold Formula One's first night race, the promoter of the race said on Thursday.

The sport's governing body, International Automobile Federation (FIA), had granted approval via the Singapore Motor Sports Council for the night race, Singapore GP Pte Ltd said in a statement.

"With two positive lighting tests under our belt, we are on track to delivering the first night race," Colin Syn, deputy chairman of the promoter, said in the statement.

The Grand Prix is scheduled for September 28 on public roads around the downtown Marina Bay area, making it Formula One's first street race in Asia.

The go-ahead follows FIA approval last month to build the planned 5.067km Singapore circuit. The city-state agreed a five-year deal for the race in May.
