The Czech Republic were held to a goalless draw in their Euro 2008 qualifier in Cardiff on Saturday, handing the Group D initiative to Germany, who play San Marino later, and ending Wales's hopes of making the tournament.

The Czechs top the group with 14 points from seven games. Germany are a point behind but have played two games less. Ireland are third on 13, from seven games. Wales are fifth on seven points from six games.

The game marked the international retirement of Wales winger Ryan Giggs after 64 caps over 16 years and the Manchester United man was given a standing ovation when substituted a few minutes from time.

Wales were impressive but missed several half-chances. Jason Koumas hit the bar with a free kick and Giggs could have bowed out with a classic solo goal after beating three defenders in a slaloming run but shot straight at the goalkeeper.

The Czechs struggled to get out of first gear, threatened only occasionally and remain embroiled in a tough three-way battle for the two qualification places.
