Footballer given methylated spirit instead of water

July 30, 2007 21:56 IST

A footballer had to be hospitalized after a doctor mistakenly gave him methylated spirit to drink instead of water during a Kolkata premier division football league match on Monday.

Simanta Das, who plays for Kolkata Port Trust, sustained a chest injury after a collision with East Bengal's Snehasis Chakraborty in the 26th minute of the second session and the referee promptly stopped play and called for medical aid.

IFA appointed doctor Nirmal Polley attended to Das, who wanted water to drink.

However, the doctor instead of water, gave him a bottle of methylated spirit, which the footballer drank. Das immediately started vomiting and was rushed to the state-run SSKM hospital in a serious condition.

After Das was taken away from the ground, the Port Trust players surrounded the doctor tried to manhandle him.

Polley, however, was rescued by the police.
