India's wild card entry Shikha Uberoi went down fighting to Yaroslava Shvedova in the first round of US $175,000 Sony Ericsson WTA Bangalore Open on Wednesday.

Shikha lost 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6 in the evening session at the KSLTA courts.

The Russian exhibited solid stuff to move into the next round, where she will meet Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn.

The 19-year-old Shvedova, ranked 143, picked up her game late in the first set after Shikha had raced to a 3-0 lead.

The tall Shvedova's big serve made the difference, while for Shikha it was a matter of holding her serve, which she failed to do.

Earlier in the day, another Indian wild card entry Tara Iyer lost her first round match to Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

Sania Mirza is the only Indian left in the fray. She opens her singles campaign with a match over Slovakian Martina Sucha on Wednesday evening.
