Anand, Murgunde bite the dust

Chetan Anand and Trupti Murgunde bowed out after losing their first round singles matches at the World Badminton Championships at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

National champion Anand put up a brave front against ninth seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia but went down 11-21, 21-14, 21-18.

Murgunde lost to Pui Yin Yip of Hong Kong 21-17, 21-13 in the women's draw.

The only Indian win on Tuesday came through the men's doubles pair of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas, who beat France's [Images] Svetoslav Stoyanov and Mihail Popov 21-9, 21-15.

The duo will meet Hendra A Gunawan and Joko Riyadi of Indonesia in the second round.

Anup Sridhar and Saina Nehwal [Images] will play their second round singles matches on Wednesday.
