India's Shankar wins chess gold in Biel

India's Gauri Shankar won the gold medal in the International Youth Chess Championship held in Biel, Switzerland [Images], from July 22 to August 3.

The 14-year-old remained unbeaten in the tournament and won the title with eight points out of a possible nine, in the nine-round chess tournament.

This was Shankar's 26th international chess medal, to improve on his record of being the youngest Indian to win the most number of chess medals for India.

The Kerala [Images] lad, who is a student of Good Shepherd International School, Ooty, is the only player to win a hat-trick in British Junior Championships and the only Indian to win the Indian, British and Unites States Junior Chess Championships.
