Renault's Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso [Images] retired from the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday with a blown engine 10 laps from the end.

The Spaniard had been running in third place, with title rival Michael Schumacher [Images] leading for Ferrari [Images].

Alonso led the seven-times champion by 12 points before Sunday's race at Monza.
