Chandra overcomes Sethi for title

National snooker champion Manan Chandra overcame maestro Geet Sethi 5-3 to win the snooker title of the Rs. 4.25 lakh Shivaji Park Gymkhana All India Open Invitation Billiards/Snooker tournament at Matunga Gymkhana in Mumbai on Sunday.

Chandra, who had beaten Pankaj Advani in the national snooker final this year, was richer by Rs 60,000 while Geet had to be contend with Rs 35,000.

In a tensely fought final, fortunes swayed from frame to frame. Sethi was off to flying start, winning the first frame 92-14 with the help of a break of 63. But Chandra replied in equally strong terms, notching up a break of 80 to take the second frame 91-22.

Earlier, in the semifinals, Sethi had to bring out his best to put out Kamal Chawla 5-3.

The other semifinal saw the national champion from PSCB getting the better of Alok Kumar 66-14, 15-63, 83-6, 27-70, 69-59, 82-28, 73-49.

Result, final: Manan Chandra bt Geet Sethi 14-92, 91-22, 41-93, 57-5, 63-42, 77-1, 75-41.
