Hosts Spain set the men's Champions Trophy hockey tournament alight with a scintillating performance that saw them shock defending champions Australia [Images] 5-3 on Wednesday, day 3 of the tournament, in Terrassa.

Down by three goals after 22 minutes, Spain fought back in grand style to snatch victory and vault to second place in the six-team league table. The defeat ended Australia's eight-match winning run.

Penalty-corner ace Santi Freixa led Spain's revival with three strikes after the Aussies went three goals up through Grant Eglington, Michael McCann and Grant Schubert.

Frexia scored before the break and then twice in the second half  before Eddie Tubau and Pol Amat finished off a remarkable comeback.

In other matches, the Netherlands thrashed Pakistan 9-2, while Germany [Images] beat Argentina 3-1.

Ronald Brouwer scored four goals for the Dutch as they took complete control of the match from the opening whistle, scoring after just 38 seconds.
