Sania goes down to Golovin

February 10, 2006 10:32 IST

French teenager Tatiana Golovin cut short Sania Mirza's debut at the Open Gaz de France in Paris to set up a quarter-final match with Nadia Petrova of Russia.

Golovin, who beat Sania in Japan last October, beat Sania 6-4, 6-2 in the second round on Thursday.

Top seed Amelie Mauresmo beat Russia's Vera Dushevina 6-2, 6-2 in her first match since winning last month's Australian Open to go through to the quarter-finals.

Mauresmo took about an hour to crush Dushevina and set up a rematch of last year's final against defending champion Dinara Safina.

Despite not playing for two weeks, the Frenchwoman looked in a great shape and raced into a 5-0 lead in the first set.

"I was really impatient to be here and to resume playing tennis," Mauresmo said.

"I'm happy with my match. I managed to get her under control from the first point.

"I gave a few points away by the end of the first set but I was not worried. I felt solid and comfortable," Mauresmo said on French TV.

"It's a bit late to enter the tournament on Thursday and I was looking forward to this match," added the world number two who was given a bye for the first round.

Mauresmo wrapped up the game on her first match point as she forced her opponent to a backhand in the net.

"In the next round I'll take on Safina. It's great. I have not played her since our last meeting here. It's going to be revenge," Mauresmo said.

Russian Fifth-seed Elena Dementieva had to struggle to tame France's Nathalie Dechy 7-6 6-4 while her compatriot Nadia Petrova beat Israel's Anna Smashnova 6-4, 6-1.
