Bhutia may regain India captaincy

M Chhaya in Kolkata | November 22, 2005 17:47 IST

Baichung Bhutia may be recalled as India captain for the December 7-17 SAFF Cup tournament, in Karachi.

Bhutia, whose injuries kept him out of action for most part of last season, has recuperated and been asked to join the national camp, in Delhi, for the SAFF Cup that started from Monday.

"I called him up and asked him to report for the camp," All India Football Federation president Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi said, adding that no decision has been taken on who would be made the captain.

"We will have to first see all the players, how they are doing and their fitness and all. Then we will decide," Dasmunshi said.

But sources in AIFF said Bhutia is all set to regain the captaincy from Shanmugam Venkatesh, who led India in recent matches.

Dasmunshi said priority now is to put together the best team for the SAFF Cup.

"We lost to Pakistan the last time. So this time we want to get all of it right," the AIFF chief said.
