Indian archers in World final

June 24, 2005 21:22 IST

India's men's archery team created history by making it to their maiden team final in the 43rd World outdoor target archery championship, in Madrid, Spain, on Friday.

The Indian team, comprising Tarundeep Rai, Goutam Singh Sardar and National champion Jayant Talukdar, defeated Poland 246-233 in the semi-final to set up a clash with World champions Korea on Sunday.

The Indians earlier got the better of Germany 252-241 and then defeated the United States 255-236 in the quarter-finals.

Korea defeated Ukraine 252-244 in the other semi-final.

The Indian women's team, however, could not emulate the feat of their male counterparts and went down to world champions Korea 233-244 in the semi-finals.

The team, comprising Dola Banerjee, Reena Kumari and Chekrovolu Swuro, defeated Georgia (230-225) and Italy (233-229) to reach the last four.

They will play Russia for the bronze medal on Sunday.

In the men's recurve individual championship, Tarundeep was unable to continue his winning run and went down to Riyuichi Moriya of Japan in the semi-finals.

The Army Sports Institute archer will meet sixth ranked Choi Won Jong of Korea in the match for the bronze medal.

The Indian men's team had finished fourth in the last World championship, in New York in 2003. The women's team ended sixth overall.

No Indian male or female ever went past the pre-quarter-finals in the individual championship.
