Germany are confident of avoiding an opening-night upset at the Confederations Cup on Wednesday when they make their Group A debut against Australia.

Major tournaments often throw up surprising results right at the start. Hosts Portugal lost to eventual champions Greece in the opening match at Euro 2004 and reigning champions France went down to Senegal at the start of the last World Cup.

Germany, who are preparing to host the 2006 World Cup, are well aware of the pitfalls.

"I think we can be completely happy with our preparation," said Joachim Loew, assistant to coach Juergen Klinsmann, on the eve of the game at Frankfurt's new Waldstadion.

"I believe we're going to have a good tournament and we're going to make a good start.

"The goal for everyone in the team is to win this event."

Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who celebrates his 36th birthday on Wednesday, said he would be glad to get the tournament underway.

"The tension grows in the build-up but that's normal," he said.

"This is a very important tournament for us because we want to know where we stand."

Germany will go on to face Tunisia and Argentina in Group A of the tournament, which runs until June 29. World champions Brazil are in Group B along with Mexico, Greece and Japan.
