Our Correspondent | June 06, 2005 17:15 IST

Sania Mirza's preparations for Wimbledon got a rousing start, as she swept past Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg in the first round of the DFC Classic International Women's Tennis tournament in Birmingham on Monday.

The Indian teen sensation, who is ranked 75 in the world, beat Schaul 6-2, 6-0.

The 21-year-old Schaul, ranked 166, failed to put up any resistance and went down in just 56 minutes.

In the second round, Sania will take on Serbia and Montegremo's Jelena Jankovic, who had a bye into the second round.

Some of the top players competing in the tier-II tournament are: Wimbledon champion Russia's Maria Sharapova, Australian world no. 8 Alicia Molik, Russian Elena Likhovtseva and Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova among others.
