Helen Mary to lead women's hockey team

Goalkeeper Helen Mary will lead India's challenge in the absence of regular skipper Surajlata Devi in the six-nation women's hockey competition -- the K T International tournament -- to be played at Seongnam, Korea, from June 7.

The Indian Women's Hockey Federation, which announced an 18-member team on Thursday, said Surajlata was not considered for selection since she did not attend the camp because of her recent marriage.

The team, under chief coach M K Kaushik, was picked following a selection trial on May 26 and 27 at the National stadium.

The tournament also involves China, England [Images], Ireland, Korea and Malaysia.

Helen Mary (captain), Kaanti Baa, Asunta Lakra, Saravjit Kaur, Deepika Thakur, Mamta Kharab, Rajni Bala, Amrita Ming, Jasjeet Kaur Handa, Sarita Lakra, Rajwinder Kaur, Jyoti Sunita, Kullu, Saba Anjum, Guddi Kumari, Anjana Barla, Gagandeep Kaur, Adline Kerketta, Subhadra Pradhan.

Officials: M K Kaushik (chief coach), Anurita Saini (manager), Y S Chauhan (assistant coach), P S M Chandran (doctor), Rajinder Kumar (video cameraman).

IWHF secretary Amrit Bose will accompany the team as a judge while P S Anupama will go as an umpire.

India open its campaign in the competition with a match against Malaysia on June 9, followed by games against England the next day, Korea (June 12), Ireland (June 13) and China (June 15).

The classification matches will be held on June 16, the IWHF said in a statement.

June 9: India vs Malaysia, Korea vs Ireland, China vs England
June 10: Malaysia vs Korea, China vs Ireland, India vs England
June 11: Rest day
June 12: England vs Ireland, India vs Korea, China vs Malaysia
June 13: India vs Ireland, Korea vs China, Malaysia vs England
June 14: Rest day
June 15: Ireland vs Malaysia, England vs Korea, India vs China
June 16: Classification matches.
