Paes-Zimonjic enters quarters

January 05, 2005 12:04 IST

India's Leander Paes began his stint with new partner Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia on a victorious note as the second seeded pair breezed past the French combine of Jean-Francois Bachelot and Gregory Carraz in straight sets to enter the quarter-finals of the doubles event of the Chennai Open 2005.

Paes and Zimonjic combined well as they never looked in any sort of trouble, wrapping up the match 6-4, 6-2, in just over an hour.

A solitary break in the third game of the first set was all that they required to clinch the set in 38 minutes.

The Indo-Serbian pair was even more precise in their game in the second set, racing up to a 5-2 lead, breaking their rivals in the fifth and seventh games as the Frenchmen failed to put up any fight. Paes then served out the match at love.

Paes, who has won the doubles title here four times with Mahesh Bhupathi, thus kept the expectations of a title clash with his erstwhile partner, who is pairing up with Jonas Bjorkman of sweden.

In the other doubles matches, Michal Tabara of the Czech Republic and Santiago Ventura of Spain scored a hard fought win over another French pair of Paul-Henri Mathieu and Oliver Patience 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, while Kim Kevin of the US and Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic won against Lars Burgsmuller of Germany and Ivo Heuberger of Switzerland 6-2, 1-6, 3-1, with the latter retiring.
