Especially not global heroes like Lance Armstrong.
And yet, not long after his astonishing seventh Tour de France win, the American icon has been forced to go on the defensive to protect his reputation.
A report in the French sports daily L'Équipe alleges he took erythropoietin (EPO), a banned blood-boosting drug, during his 1999 race.
