Top women's tennis stars to play in Kolkata

M. Chhaya in Kolkata | September 22, 2004 15:15 IST

Indian doubles ace Mahesh Bhupathi is working to bring a top grade women's tennis tournament to Kolkata in November 2005.

Bhupathi's sports company 'Globosports' will bring together the top names in women's tennis for a 'World Women's Tennis' championship, that will be an indoor affair and first of its kind in India.

Bhupathi has inspected the Netaji Indoor Stadium, the venue of the proposed tournament. The stadium is now in disarray, but the West Bengal government has promised to get it in shape by early next year.

Bhupathi met state Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, who assured him of all help.

The Kshudiram indoor training facility, next to the Netaji stadium, will also get a facelift.

Bhupathi said while the matches would be held in the indoor stadium, players could practice at the training centre.

"It's an advantage that the training facility is so close to the match venue," he added said.

The stadium will have two courts that can host matches simultaneously.

Globosports is currently in talks with the agents of the top women tennis players to find out their late-2005 itinerary.
