Cisse out with broken leg

October 31, 2004 16:08 IST

Liverpool and France striker Djibril Cisse is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a horrific leg break in his club's 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers.

The striker, signed from Auxerre for 14 million pounds in the close season, went down in agony on Saturday after his left leg crumpled following a challenge by Blackburn defender James McEveley, 30 minutes into the game at Ewood Park.

After lengthy treatment Cisse, 23, was carried off and taken to hospital for x-rays.

"Our club doctor Mark Waller has confirmed that Djibril Cisse suffered a fracture of the tibia and fracture of the fibula in his left leg," said a Liverpool club spokesman.

"Djibril will undergo surgery on Sunday morning to insert a pin in the tibia. Unfortunately he is unlikely to play again this season and everybody at the club wishes him the speediest of recoveries."
