Canas wins Shanghai Open

October 03, 2004 17:41 IST

Argentine Guillermo Canas crushed Germany's Lars Burgsmuller 6-1, 6-0 to win the Shanghai Open on Sunday.

Canas broke his opponent's serve in the third game of the first set and never looked back, as a shell-shocked Burgsmuller committed numerous unforced errors against an opponent for whom it seemed no ball was irretrievable.

"When I won this game to go 3-1 up, I knew that it would be difficult for him to take the first set," Canas said after a match that lasted less than an hour.

"It was tough for him to lose the first set in the finals 6-1, so I knew if I could continue like this it would be tough for him to get back in the game."

Canas earned $52,000 for his sixth career win and is looking for his form to continue next week in Tokyo at the Japan Open.

"If I play in Tokyo like I played this week, then I have a chance," he said.

The Argentine won back-to-back tournaments earlier this year at Stuttgart and Umag in what he views as the first of two stages to his recovery from hand surgery in March 2003.

"I think for me there have been two parts to my recuperation. The first part started this year and I've won three titles so far, but the second part is next year, where my goal is to be in the top 10.

"Everything is about that and I hope I can do it."
