May 17, 2004 12:16 IST

China blasted a clear Olympic badminton warning with victory this weekend in the finals of the sport's prestige team competitions, the Thomas and Uber Cups.

The Chinese men beat Denmark 3-1 in the Thomas Cup 24 hours after the women overcame South Korea by the same score to retain the Uber Cup.

China won four of the five badminton titles at the Sydney Games in 2000 and with so much strength in depth are clear favourites to strike multiple gold again in Athens.

In one of the key singles games on Sunday, world number one Lin Dan beat top Dane Peter Gade 15-8, 15-13 in a repeat of their All England final clash in March.

The women's victory on Saturday meant a fourth Uber Cup in a row for China who were set on the winning trail when world number one Gong Ruina battled back to beat Jun Jae-yun 7-11, 11-5, 11-7 in the opening game.
