Silver goal rule in extra-time

June 24, 2004 02:38 IST

The silver goal rule will be used for the last time by UEFA at a tournament when the knockout phase of Euro 2004 starts on Thursday.

If teams are level after 90 minutes, extra-time of two halves of 15 minutes each will be played.

But, under the silver goal rule, a team leading at the end of the first 15-minute period will be declared the winner.

If the teams are still level, the second period of extra time will be played.

At the end of 120 minutes, if teams are still level, a penalty shootout will be staged.
