Mohinder Lal passes away

July 29, 2004 20:32 IST

Former Olympian Mohinder Lal passed away at his residence in Spain on Thursday morning, the Indian Hockey Federation said.

Lal, who converted a penalty-stroke in the final to give India the gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, also won a silver medal in the 1960 Games in Rome.

The versatile right-half had settled in Spain after retiring from the Indian Railways. He also worked as coach of Real Club de Polo, Barcelona, for many years.

"He was a thorough gentleman. He was a true sportsman and spent his life for the promotion of hockey.

"We share the grief of the bereaved family and pray to God to give them courage to bear the irreparable loss," a statement from the IHF, condoling Lal's demise, added.
