Levante rule out Zagorakis signing

July 16, 2004 12:38 IST

Newly promoted Spanish side Levante have called off talks to sign Greek captain Theodoros Zagorakis and blamed the failure of the negotiations on the player's agents.

"The talks to sign Zagorakis have broken down because of a lack of seriousness and professionalism on the part of the player's representatives," the Primera Liga club said on its web site on Thursday.

Zagorakis, named player of the tournament at Euro 2004 after leading his country to a shock victory over Portugal in the final, was released from his contract with debt-laden AEK Athens on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old former Leicester City midfielder had also been linked with a move to Italian club Bologna.

Levante, comfortable winners of the second division title, have recruited Ireland left back Ian Harte from Leeds United and Sweden defender Johan Mjallby from Celtic as they prepare for their first season in the Primera Liga for 39 years.
