Fazekas takes discus gold

August 24, 2004 02:06 IST

Robert Fazekas of Hungary won the Olympic men's discus gold medal on Monday with a second-round Games record throw of 70.93 metres.

Fazekas has spent most of the year battling for dominance with Virgilijus Alekna and the Lithuanian had his nose in front with a throw of 69.89 in the first round, breaking Lars Riedel's 1996 Olympic record.

But Fazekas responded with 70.93 in the second round, which proved enough for gold.

Alekna, the world and defending Olympic champion, took silver, with another Hungarian, Zoltan Kovago collecting bronze with 67.04.

Germany's Riedel, five times world champion, limped out of Monday's final after suffering a groin injury on his third throw.
