Lone goal win for Indian Bank

April 20, 2004 20:52 IST

Indian Bank, relegated to the second division, scored a consolation victory against Tollygunge Agragami thanks to the solitary goal by former international Syed Sabir Pasha in the eighth National Football League match in Chennai on Tuesday.

The local outfit, which has eight points with two more rounds to go, is in the last spot and is likely to be joined by Tollygunge Agragami or Mohammedan Sporting in the relegation zone. The two Kolkata teams have garnered 18 points and lie 10th and 11th in the table respectively.

In today's match, there was nothing to choose among the teams, except for the fact that the bankmen displayed good passing moves in the second half. The visitors were hard working, but lacked finish on a number of occasions.

In the 27th minute, Shamsy Raza's powerful 20 yard right footer was palmed away by Indian Bank's goalkeeper Felix Edward.

However, the local outfit, supported vocally by a sparse crowd, came close to scoring twice, before Pasha found the target in the 68th minute.

The lone goal came about after defender Isiaka failed to clear a low cross from Mahendramani on the left. The ball went to Pasha near the goal, who juggled with it for a few seconds, before chipping it in.
