India claims two more gold in shooting
April 04, 2004 22:23 IST
India grabbed two more gold medals through Jaspal Rana, in centre fire pistol individual event, and Rajkumari, in 50 m sports rifle prone 60 shots, in shooting in the ninth SAF Games in Islamabad on Sunday.
With six more golds to be decided (in three events) India has already surpassed their last year's performance by securing 22 gold, six silver and seven bronze medals as compared to their last year's tally of 21-10-6.
Rana, who did not face any stiff competition, won the gold with a tally of 582.
"The target was in a shade and he faced little problem with it. Otherwise, I am happy with my performance," he said.
The ace shooter asserted his superiority after he also clinched the team gold medal along with father and son combination of Ashok Pandit and Ronak Pandit.
But it was a tough day for India's Rajkumari and Meenakumari and Sri Lanka's Pushpamala Ramanayake in the 50 m sports rifle prone 60 shots, the lone women's event today.
Rajkumari with 589 points claimed the gold and Ramanayake (588) and Meenakumari (587) settled for the silver and the bronze medal respectively.
Rajkumari and Meena led in the first two details and the Sri Lankan trailed at the third place. Ramanayake who was still lagging behind by two points at the end of fourth round, went for the last ditch effort in the sixth and final detail, where she got a 99 to Rajkumari's 98.
However, Ramanayake lodged a protest that in the third detail Rajkumari had scored only 94 points and it has been changed to 96 while Meenakumari's also protested about her scores in the third to fifth series. The organising committee after checking the target cards rejected both the protests.
