Prakash Amritraj pulls out of quarter-final

October 29, 2003 15:42 IST

India's medal hopes in tennis at the first Afro-Asian Games suffered a setback when top seed Prakash Amritraj pulled out of the singles main draw due to an indisposition on Wednesday.

Amritraj, who was to play Congo's Sony Koyombo in the quarter-finals, withdrew from the tie as he was running fever.

"Prakash has pulled out as he is running fever and has a sore throat. Koyombo has got a walkover and moved into the semi-finals," Chief Referee Nitin Kannamwar said.

With the Indians completely dominating the tennis event, Amritraj and compatriot Vijay Kannan were expected to set up a title clash. However, now the Indian challenge will rest on Kannan, who moved into the semi-finals with a straight-set victory over Sri Lanka's Harashana Godamana.

India already won both the team event gold medals.
