October 16, 2003 21:33 IST

Centre-forward Ajit Pal Singh's brace enabled Punjab and Sind Bank trounce Indian Oil, Delhi, 4-1 in the final of the seventh Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mahindra Stadium, in Mumbai, on Thursday.

Ajit Pal opened the account for the bankmen when he flicked home a Baljit Singh Chandi pass in the second minute of the match.

The winners were unable to increase the lead despite having more possession for the remainder of the first session.

Four minutes after the half-time, Parminder Singh increased the lead, scoring after receiving a pass from skipper Sandeep Singh.

Five minutes later, Jatinder Pal Singh, who was later given temporary suspension in the 64th minute for rough play, made it 3-0, scoring from the bankmen's third penalty-corner.

Indian Oil's Inder Salaria pulled a goal back in the 47th minute but Ajit Pal scored again in the 52nd minute to complete the rout.

The bankmen forced as many as seven penalty-corners but could convert just one while Indian Oil got two.
