Rupesh Roy wins in Pakistan

Top seed Rupesh Roy won the first leg of ITF Pakistan International Junior Tennis championship defeating fellow Indian and second seed Sumit Gupta in a three set thriller in Islamabad on Sunday.

There was not much to choose between Roy and Gupta, both of whom belong to the National Tennis Academy, throughout the tie but the former displayed better control from the baseline to take the title in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

The victory gave Roy 30 valuable ranking points while Gupta had to be content with 20.

The second leg of the championship begins on Monday with Roy and Nungnudda Wannasuk of Thailand being declared the top seeds in the boys and girls section respectively.

Boys: 1. Rupesh Roy (IND), 2. Sumit Gupta (IND), 3. Shahzad Khan (PAK), 4. Sivendran Nishendiran (SRI),  5. Wasif Cheema (PAK), 6. Vivek Shokeen (IND),  7. Sandeep Kumar (IND), 8. Mutib Pasha.

Girls: 1. Nungnudda Wannasuk (THA), 2. Punjaporn Ditthim (THA), 3. Shweta Kakhandaki (IND), 4. Venkatesh Poojashree (IND).
