Leander returning to India on Sunday

October 03, 2003 22:47 IST

Indian tennis ace Leander Paes, who is recuperating from a brain cyst at his US base in Orlando, will return to India on Sunday, his father Dr. Vece Paes said.

"I spoke to him [Leander] over phone yesterday, and he told me he is returning home on Sunday," Dr. Paes said from Kolkata on Friday.

Paes was admitted to the Orlando Regional Medical Center in Florida for brain lesion a week before the US Open last month. The tumour turned out to be a mere parasytic infection of tapeworm rather than any cancerous growth as the doctors feared.

The doubles star was out of the hospital within days and since then has been undergoing treatment at his Orlando home.

A scan on September 19 revealed 50 per cent reduction of the cyst.

"The next scan is supposed to be done after 30 days from the previous one, on October 19," Dr Paes said.

Himself a sports medicine expert, Dr Paes said Leander hopes to be fit in time for the year-end Tennis Masters Cup, in Houston, beginning November 10.

"Leander actually wants to play the year-end championships; I don't know if that will be possible," he said.

He added, Leander's wish of playing at Houston would depend on the medical tests in the coming days.

"At the moment I am more concerned about his well-being than seeing him getting back on the court.

"Much will depend on the scan results in the coming weeks. If the doctors say he can't play, he can't."
