Three goals in a five-minute spell in the second half saw Germany rout Russia 7-1 in the quarter-finals of the women's World Cup football tournament in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday.

In the other match of the day, Canada scored in the seventh minute through Charmaine Hooper to beat 1999 runners-up China 1-0 and advance to Sunday's semis, where they face Sweden, who had beaten Brazil 2-1.

Germany meets the United States in the other semi-final.

Striker Birgit Prinz scored twice for Germany to become the tournament's leading scorer with six goals.

Germany could score just once in the first half through Martina Müller in the 25th minute. But the Russians were outplayed in the second period. Sandra Minnert, Pia Wunderlich and Kerstin Garefrekes scored three goals in five minutes around the 60th minute, before Prinz (80th and 89th minutes) and Garefrekes (85th minute) could complete the rout.

Russia got their consolation goal in the 70th minute through Elena Danilova.
