Sania in French Open draw

May 09, 2003 22:20 IST

Sania Mirza is the only Indian in the singles main draw of the French Open Grand Slam championships, to be held at Roland Garros from June 3, according to the acceptance list released by the International Tennis Federation.

The 16-year-old Hyderabad girl, who is sponsored by the GVK Group of Industries, had recently broken into the top ten of the world in singles and top 15 in doubles in the junior category, and is likely to be seeded this year at the Junior French Open.

This is Sania's eighth Grand Slam entry since she made her debut in Paris in 2001.

Sania will also be playing the Grade One Astrid Bowl in Belgium, which is a warm-up event for the French Open. She will then participate in two $25,000 professional events in Italy on clay before playing on grass at Roehampton, London, in preparation for the Wimbledon championships.
