Sanaa, Rastogi lose

June 23, 2003 21:36 IST

India's top juniors Sanaa Bhambri and Karan Rastogi crashed out in the first round of the ITF Grade 1 junior tennis event at Roehampton, London, on Sunday.

Sanaa did well to fight back after losing the first set but her 128th ranked opponent, Tiffany Welford of Australia, a lucky loser, proved too good in the final set and won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Rastogi faced a much tougher rival in Briton Jamie Baker, ranked 21 compared to the Indian's 50 in the juniors' list

After narrowly losing the first set via the tie-breaker, Baker pushed his game a notch up to take the next two sets and complete a 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The two other Indians in the fray, Somdev Dev Verman and Sania Mirza, had their first round matches postponed due to rain.

The event is a tune-up for the Wimbledon junior championships, beginning on June 29.
