The Great Survivor

Armstrong was a young achiever. At age 16, he was competing in the in the 'Iron Kids' triathlon program. During his last year in school he was invited by the United States Cycling Federation to train with the Junior national cycling team.

He made his Tour debut at 21, in 1993, when he became the youngest ever to win a stage. But like many before him, he discovered that the Tour had it's own way of getting back. The American quit before the finish in 1994. He was 36th in 1995, and then pulled out in 1996.
