Born to former Australian Rules footballer Norman and wife Ceciliaon, on February 16, 1973 in Mackay, Queensland, Cathy is the third of five children.

But her life has been anything but a walk in the park. As a kid she was discriminated against by the 'whites' around her; her father left home when she was five; she was sexually molested at 11; her only sister suffered cerebral palsy and died in her twenties.

She won the Commonwealth gold in Auckland as a 16-year-old in the 4 x 100 metres relay against the odds. Her participation was made possible after her team-mates protested against plans to exclude her from the team.
