July 10, 2003 20:31 IST

Army Service Corps, Bangalore, thrashed Mumbai XI 7-4 in Group 'B', while Karnataka, helped by a superb hat-trick by full-back Len Aiyappa, beat Indian Overseas Bank 4-2 in Group 'D', in the 81st All India MCC Murugappa hockey tournament in Chennai on Thursday evening.

After trailing 2-4 at the break, the Mumbai forwards played like men possessed in the second-half but their defence was unable to stop the marauding armymen.

Harpreet Singh and Ashif Ali scored two goals each, while Pradeep Singh, Suresh and Rova Bhengara sounded the board once for ASC.

Rajiv Bhatkar, Asad Khan, Rajnish Chaturvedi and Savio Nayak scored for Mumbai.

The Karnataka-IOB match saw the former enjoying the major share of the attack in the first-half. For Karnataka, Amar Aiyanna opened the account in the second minute before Aiyappa scored a hat-trick, all from penalty-corner conversions.

D Felix netted both the goals for the bankmen, who attacked fiercely in the second-half, but failed to convert the chances that came their way.
