Baretto strikes twice for Bagan

January 25, 2003 21:24 IST

Jose Barreto scored a brace as a depleted Mohun Bagan trounced Indian Bank 4-0 in the seventh National Football League in Kolkata on Saturday.

The green and maroon brigade, desperate to log full points from home matches to remain in the fray for the title, reduced the Salt Lake stadium exchange to an one-sided affair, even without Baichung Bhutia and two other key players.

Medio Renedy Singh gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break before in-form striker George Ekeh increased the margin and Barreto demolished the rival defence, striking twice and creating chances galore for the others in the second session.

The only chance that the visitors got was a Stanley Festus's grounder from top of the box that went past Bagan keeper Bibash Ghosh, but was saved by skipper Dulal Biswas from the goalline in the 43rd minute.

With the emphatic win, Bagan gained three points and a lot of confidence as their tally improved to 15 from nine outings so far.

The Chennai-based Indian Bank, on the other hand, remained with 11 points from nine matches.
