Paes-Navratilova in mixed-doubles final

January 24, 2003 14:01 IST

The unseeded pair of Leander Paes and Martina Navratilova completed a surprise straight sets victory over fifth seeds Kevin Ullyet (Zimbabwe) and Daniela Hanutchova (Slovakia) to advance to the final of the mixed doubles competition at the Australian Open.

The Indo-American team used their experience and quickness at the net to race to a 6-3, 6-1 win over the fancied pair in just 67 minutes.

They will now face Todd Woodbridge (Australia) and Eleni Daniidilou (Greece) in the final.

Woodbridge and Daniidilou overpowered Donald Johnson and Rennae Stubbs 6-4, 6-2 in their semi-final match.

In the quarter-finals, Paes and Navratilova had beaten Mahesh Bhupathi and Iroda Tulyaganova 6-4, 6-3.
